Metal Fabrication in China: What to Check Before You Order

Metal fabrication in China works when you check the factory, not the brochure. Our factory in Nanpi, Hebei, has run presses since 1999. We hold 40+ presses from 60T to 400T, plus a 6kW laser. Our team is 120 people, including 19 engineers. This guide lists what to verify before you order. Every point is one we show buyers ourselves. Start with the checks, then judge the price. For the building and the line, see our metal fabrication factory.

What Metal Fabrication Covers

Metal fabrication means turning flat sheet into finished parts. It is more than cutting. Our chain runs inside one building.

  • Laser cutting: flat blanks and complex outlines.
  • Bending: flanges and boxes on CNC presses.
  • Stamping and deep drawing: formed parts at volume.
  • Welding: MIG, TIG and fixture welding for assemblies.
  • CNC machining: features the sheet process cannot reach.
  • Surface treatment: plating, powder coating, passivation.

A trader outsources most of these steps. In our factory the part walks; it is not shipped. The process detail is on our laser cutting service page. One roof means one owner when a defect appears.

Why the Nanpi Cluster Matters

Nanpi, in Cangzhou, Hebei, is China’s hardware manufacturing cluster. Material mills, equipment vendors and finishing shops sit side by side. The density cuts three costs. Material lead time drops from days to hours. A local shop machines a die repair in one day. A problem found at 3 pm is fixed by 9 am. Our factory has bought from this cluster since 1999. Twenty-six years of local supply means we do not guess at material. That is why metal fabrication in China stays competitive here.

The 6 Checks Before You Order

Check What to ask Red flag
Press capacity How many presses, what tonnage range? No list, only a brochure line
Process chain Which steps run in-house? Everything outsourced, nothing shown
Engineering How many engineers review my drawing? Only sales answers, never an engineer
QC records Send a sample FAI report, similar part Photos only, no measurement data
Material control Which mills do you buy from? Unnamed suppliers, no certificates
References Who do you supply in my region? Vague names, no follow-up possible

Run the six checks against any quote you hold. Most answers come from one email. The factory that answers all six in one day is the factory worth visiting, in person or on video.

Press Capacity: The Number That Matters

Press count and tonnage decide what you can stamp. We run 40+ presses from 60T to 400T. Our largest single point is a 400T press. That range covers thin clips to thick chassis parts. Deep drawing needs more tonnage than buyers expect. A 2mm steel cup may need 300T. If a factory holds only 100T presses, your cup cannot be drawn there. Ask for the press list, not the brochure line. Our stamping capacity guide maps part size to press tonnage.

Quality Control Without a Visit

  • ISO 9001:2015: certified, audited, renewed on schedule.
  • First articles: measured against the drawing before any run.
  • In-process sampling: every Nth piece on the line.
  • Final inspection: dimensions, finish, count and packing.
  • Reports: measurement data, not just an “OK” email.

A remote buyer needs paper. Ask for a sample FAI report from a similar part. If a factory cannot produce one, it does not keep records. Our full flow is on the quality inspection page. Records are the part of the factory you can visit from abroad.

Comparing Quotes Fairly

Two quotes for the same part can differ by a third. The gap is rarely labor. It is process and scope. Check these lines before you compare numbers.

  • Tooling must be a separate line.
  • Shipping terms must match: FOB versus DDP.
  • Lead time is written, not promised by phone.
  • What is included and what is not, in writing.

Our guide on metal stamping cost breaks the unit price into steps. Compare like for like, or the number means nothing.

A Day Inside Our Factory

  • Morning: material checked against the mill certificate.
  • Cutting: laser and presses run the daily schedule.
  • Midday: operators self-check the first pieces of each die.
  • Afternoon: QC samples and records the measurements.
  • Close: parts move to surface treatment or packing.

The routine is the product. A factory that runs this loop every day ships parts that match the drawing. It is the same loop on a first order and a thousandth. That loop is what metal fabrication in China should look like.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is metal fabrication in China?

It is cutting, bending, stamping and welding sheet metal into finished parts. The checks in this guide separate strong factories from traders.

How do I verify a Chinese metal factory remotely?

Ask for the press list, a sample FAI report, the mill names and a video walkthrough. Four documents, one email. We send all four.

What press tonnage does my part need?

It scales with size, thickness and draw depth. A 2mm steel cup can need 300T. Send the drawing and we confirm the press first.

Do you ship to Europe and the Americas?

Yes. Most of our output ships to Europe and the Americas. Terms are FOB or DDP, stated in the quote header.

What should my first order include?

The drawing, the material spec, the quantity and the term. We reply with a quote, a DFM check and a sample plan.
