Stainless Steel Shell Fabrication: How Much Do You Know?

The stainless steel shell fabrication is becoming the preferred solution for an increasing number of equipment manufacturers.

Compared to standardized mass-produced parts, custom metal parts offer significant advantages in adaptability, performance, assembly efficiency, and product premium.

  1. Precise Adaptation: Achieve precise matching for irregular and complex layouts based on device size, structure, and functional requirements.
  2. Performance Optimization: Through rational material selection and structural design, achieve the optimal balance in performance.
  3. Integration Efficiency Enhancement: Integrate multiple functions, reduce assembly steps and the number of components, and shorten the production cycle.
  4. Brand Value Enhancement: Unique appearance and surface treatment enhance product recognizability and strengthen market competitiveness.

Due to its outstanding corrosion resistance, high strength, and long lifespan, stainless steel has become the preferred material for the enclosures of high-end equipment.

Stainless Steel Shell Fabrication–Advantages and Applications

The core advantage is that the chromium oxide layer can resist rust without painting.

The surface is smooth and easy to clean, meeting food-grade and medical-grade hygiene standards. It can maintain structural integrity and appearance quality for a long time in harsh environments. At the same time, it can provide various advanced surface effects such as brushed, mirror finish, and sandblasting.

Metal casings are widely used in:

  • Electronic communication (cases and cabinets, server shells)
  • Medical devices (equipment shells, supports)
  • Automotive industry (body panels, battery pack shells)
  • Aerospace
  • Industrial machinery
  • New energy equipment
  • Smart Home

For industrial products that require structural protection, electromagnetic shielding, or aesthetic decoration, metal casings are almost indispensable.

Common Challenges and Solutions

Based on our extensive experience in serving over 3,000 enterprises worldwide in the field of stainless steel shell fabrication, we have identified the following common challenges and our corresponding solutions:

Challenge 1: Material rebound causes dimensional deviation.

The rebound rate of stainless steel is higher than that of ordinary cold-rolled sheets. After bending, it is prone to angle deviation, which affects assembly accuracy.design-optimization

We obtain accurate rebound data through trial bending and reserve compensation in the mold design. The DFM optimization is carried out by 19 engineers with over 20 years of experience, predicting problems from the source.

During production, a coordinate measuring machine is used to monitor the dimensions throughout the process, ensuring that each product meets the tolerance requirements.

Challenge Two: Welding Thermal Deformation.

Stainless steel has poor heat conductivity. During welding, the heat is concentrated, and thin plates are prone to deformation.

We adopt automatic spot welding and precise welding techniques to control heat input, optimize the welding sequence and fixture design, and combine strategies such as segmented skipping welding. To minimize deformation to the greatest extent.

After welding, a dedicated shaping process is used to restore flatness, ensuring shell assembly accuracy.

Challenge Three: Surface Scratches and Defects.

The surface of stainless steel is prone to scratches during cutting, bending, and transportation.

We implement strict surface protection throughout the fabrication process. We have two surface treatment production lines, providing options such as wire drawing, polishing, and sandblasting. Additionally, our laser marking equipment performs non-contact marking, avoiding secondary damage.

Challenge 4: Processing of complex structures is very difficult.

Designs such as irregular parts, deep cavity parts, and densely perforated components have extremely high requirements for equipment and processes.

We have a complete set of equipment for metal parts processing and the ability to handle them independently.
