Export Packaging for Metal Parts in Ocean Freight: Anti-Rust & Pallets

Export Packaging Standards (BLUF):

Ocean Transit Protection: Custom metal parts shipped across 30-day ocean routes face severe salt-fog humidity and container condensation. Our standard export packaging combines: 1) Sealed VCI polymer bags with active silica gel desiccant packs; 2) 5-ply corrugated master cartons (250 lbs/sq inch burst test) with corner edge protectors; 3) Heat-treated fumigated wooden pallets (ISPM 15 certified) wrapped in 6 layers of stretch film and reinforced with PET plastic strapping.

Why Ocean Freight Packaging Fails

Thirty days at sea exposes finished steel and aluminum parts to salt-laden air, container condensation, vibration and pallet impacts. Packaging must control humidity, prevent metal-to-metal contact and keep cartons stable during repeated handling.

Four-Layer Export Packaging Architecture

  1. Part preparation: Clean, dry and apply the approved rust preventive film before packing.
  2. VCI barrier: Seal parts in VCI polymer bags with active silica gel; do not mix wet packaging materials with finished surfaces.
  3. Carton and cushioning: Use 5-ply cartons, edge protectors, dividers and a documented gross-weight limit.
  4. Pallet and container securing: Use ISPM 15 heat-treated pallets, six layers of stretch film, PET strapping, corner boards and load bars where required.

Drop-Test Matrix

Package level Test height Typical acceptance Inspection focus
Small carton 760 mm No product deformation Seal and corner crush
Master carton 610 mm No carton rupture Divider and edge protection
Pallet load 300 mm No shifting or strap failure Stretch wrap and blocking
Mixed export load 150 mm Stable after handling Center of gravity and labels

FAQ

Should VCI replace desiccant?

No. VCI protects the metal surface while desiccant reduces free moisture; using both is safer for long ocean routes.

Are wooden pallets acceptable for every country?

Use only heat-treated, marked pallets compliant with ISPM 15 and confirm destination requirements before loading.

How do you prevent carton collapse?

Control stack height, use 5-ply board and corner protectors, and keep the actual gross weight within the validated compression limit.
